The Broadway musical based on the life and times of the Temptations, Ain’t Too Proud, has earned 12 Tony Award nominations, the second-largest total for the 2019 honors, including best musical. The contenders were announced April 30, the winners will be revealed June 9.

The nominations for Ain’t Too Proud also include best book of a musical (Dominique Morisseau) and best direction (Des McAnuff). Three of the cast are up for Tonys: Derrick Baskin, Jeremy Pope and Ephraim Sykes.

Baskin plays Otis Williams, a founder member of the Temptations whose autobiography forms the basis for the musical. Pope and Sykes have the roles of Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin, respectively. The musical’s additional Tony nominations are for choreography, orchestration, costume design, sound design, scenic design and lighting design.

Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations opened at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre in New York in March this year, following earlier runs in four North American cities. Universal Music has released the original cast album, and is a co-producer of the musical, as is Sony/ATV Music Publishing, which represents all the legendary group’s classic songs featured in the show.
