Diana Ross was one of her biggest-selling LPs on first release, a Top 5 chart success which also contained two No. 1 singles, the Oscar®-nominated “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To)” and the Grammy®-nominated “Love Hangover.”
Diana Ross was first issued by Motown Records in February 1976. During the first six months of that year, Diana enjoyed the two chart-topping 45s cited above, and completed a successful, eight-nation European tour as well as a triumphant series of concerts at New York’s Palace Theater. Billboard magazine had published a special supplement hailing Diana’s career, and Motown was celebrating July as “Diana Ross Month” with a marketing and promotion campaign.
The vinyl reissue of Diana Ross contains nine tracks, as on the original. In addition to the No. 1 hits, they include “One Love In My Lifetime,” which was released as a single in July ’76; Diana’s version of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson’s song, “Ain’t Nothin’ But A Maybe,” which she self-produced; and her revival of “Smile,” the timeless standard co-written by movie giant Charlie Chaplin.
Diana Ross in its 40th anniversary remains a music staple, made all the more iconic by its extraordinary close-up cover shot by famed fashion photographer Victor Skrebneski – an image that differentiates the album from Ms. Ross’ other self-titled album, her solo debut in 1970, which featured a full-body shot by another renowned photographer, Harry Langdon.
