Supreme Glamour, Mary Wilson’s illustrated history of her globe-conquering career with the Supremes, is due to be published by Thames & Hudson in the U.K. in May, with U.S. publication following in September. The book features a foreword by Whoopi Goldberg.
Described as “the inside story of the original pop fashionistas,” the 240-page book visually showcases 32 of the Supremes’ most eye-catching gowns, reassembled and photographed on the Grammy Museum stage. Captions detail the design, fabric and embellishments of each ensemble, as well as the occasion when each was worn by the Motown group during their hit-making heyday of the 1960s and ’70s.
Supreme Glamour was written by Wilson with Mark Bego, and is interspersed with hundreds of archival photos, many from the Motown Records vaults. Bego is best known to Motown fans as co-author of Martha Reeves’ autobiography, Dancing In The Street. In addition, he has authored scores of music biographies, including those about Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Elton John, Michael Jackson and Madonna.
Wilson, a founder member of the Supremes when first they were the Primettes in 1959, has written two autobiographies, Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme and Supreme Faith (with Patricia Romanowski). Thames & Hudson is publisher of Motown: The Sound Of Young America by Adam White with Barney Ales, and many other music titles, including Legacy by the Jacksons (2018), Uncompromising Expression: Blue Note (2014) and Verve: The Sound Of America (2013).
